Life

Mehmet Feridun Bey was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "sube muduru". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

At about 18, in 1890/91, Mehmet Feridun began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1891/92, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Feridun in the same post, customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1907/08 instead of a title.

Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 160 in 1899/1900, as Rüsumat Memuru in Istanbul, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 16 years of salary come to 23,160 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08. Mehmet Feridun received a rank (rütbe).
