Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Hafız Hasan Suphi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hasan Suphi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 16, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Hasan Suphi in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Suphi then moved to Nazilli and Ayvalık from 1878 to 1882, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1882 to 1888, with a rise to customs official (Rüsumat Memuru) in 1884/85. From 1888 to 1909 every annual entry places Hasan Suphi again in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 1,200 in 1908/09, as Rüsumat Memuru in Istanbul, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 220,680 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
