Life#
Born in Malatya in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Damascus (Şam) in 1877/78, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Ahmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Havran, where the entries run to 1891/92. Ahmet then moved to Baalbek from 1893 to 1900, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Ma'an (Maan) and Hicaz from 1900 to 1903 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1903/04, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1902/03.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 2,500 in 1902/03, the peak, as Müfettiş in Hicaz, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 2,000 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04. Ahmet probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerine göre Malatya doğumlu memurlar: 1879-1909" by RAMAZAN ÇELEM (2014) (the name and the birthplace agree).
