Life#
Abdüllatif Lütfü Efendi was born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdüllatif Lütfü also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1878/79, Abdüllatif Lütfü began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Jableh (Cebele), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Abdüllatif Lütfü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Havran. Abdüllatif Lütfü then moved to As-Suwayda in 1883/84 and Suhyun in 1885/86, then Jableh from 1886 to 1891. Next came Damascus (Şam) from 1891 to 1893. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1893 to 1899.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 500 in 1883/84, as Muhabere Memuru in As-Suwayda, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
