Life#
İbrahim Vehbi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1880/81, İbrahim Vehbi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places İbrahim Vehbi in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İbrahim Vehbi to Thessaloniki in 1882/83. From 1883 to 1905 the annual entries place İbrahim Vehbi in Kosova, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1899/1900 as an assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 1,480 in 1902/03, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Kosova, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 210,480 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
