Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Ali Rıza Rahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ali Rıza Rahim also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
At about 16, in 1877/78, Ali Rıza Rahim began work in Petrich (Petriç), with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Ali Rıza Rahim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola (Manastır), where the entries run to 1886/87. Ali Rıza Rahim then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik), Tikves and Štip (İştip) from 1887 to 1898, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1894/95, then Feres (Ferecik) from 1898 to 1903. Next came a return to Tikves from 1903 to 1905. The last post was in Hârșova (Hırsova) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Štip, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1905/06, the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
