Life#
Mehmet Adil Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Adil also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1891/92, Mehmet Adil began work in Erzurum, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmet Adil as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kırklareli, where the entries run to 1896/97. Mehmet Adil then moved to Eleşkirt in 1897/98, then back to Erzurum, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1900. Next came Erzincan, Feres (Ferecik), Zvezdets (Göktepe) and Erzurum, four places in five years. The last post was in Yusufeli (Kiskim) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Yusufeli, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
