Life#
Born in Drama in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (gümrük memuru). At about 15, in 1876/77, Ali Rıza began work in Drama, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ohrid (Ohri). Next came Serres (Siroz) from 1885 to 1899, then Razlog in 1899/1900. The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza back to Serres from 1900 to 1904. The last posts were in Eleftheroupoli (Pravişte) from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 500 in 1899/1900, as 3. Müdür in Razlog, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. Ali Rıza probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Dramalı devlet adamları" by HÜSEYİN ZEYNO (2026) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
