Life#
Hasan Ruhi Efendi was born in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Ruhi began work in Yenisehir-i Fener in 1869/70, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Hasan Ruhi in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) from 1873 to 1878, then Çatalca from 1878 to 1880. From 1881 to 1905 every annual entry places Hasan Ruhi in Istanbul. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,200 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less.
