Life#
İstepan Çadırcıyan Efendi was born in Yozgat in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); İstepan Çadırcıyan also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1872/73 to 1888/89 places İstepan Çadırcıyan in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Yozgat, the birthplace. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1889/90.
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 570 in 1884/85, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Yozgat, when 57 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1889/90.
