Life#
Kirkor Tütüncüyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Kirkor Tütüncüyan also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1872/73, Kirkor Tütüncüyan began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1873/74 to 1895/96 places Kirkor Tütüncüyan in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 500 in 1876/77, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 121,680 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
