Life#
Taşçıyan Markar Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Taşçıyan Markar also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1870/71 to 1909/10 places Taşçıyan Markar in Beyoğlu, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1893/94 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Only 15 of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more stayed in one place throughout. Entries spanning 41 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 1,300 in 1909/10, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 41 years the salaries add up to 370,200 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
