Life#
Born in Sivas in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Ohannes Bader Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ohannes Bader had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Kastamonu in 1870/71, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Ohannes Bader in Erzurum as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1876/77. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1879. Next came Kastamonu in 1879/80, then Kütahya from 1880 to 1891. Ohannes Bader then moved to Skopje (Üsküp) and Kosova from 1891 to 1895. The last post was in Kumanovo (Kumanova) in 1896/97. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 600 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kosova, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 105,180 kuruş, 78 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
