Life#
Mehmet Kamil Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Kütahya in 1888/89, at about 31, paid from the start, on 285 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 31 or older. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Mehmet Kamil as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Kütahya, where the entries run to 1899/1900, with a rise to transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Ankara and Edirne from 1900 to 1904 and Istanbul from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 1,000 in 1904/05, the peak, as Veznadar in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
