Life#
Hüseyin Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin began work in Serres (Siroz) in 1888/89, at about 30, paid from the start, on 285 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 30 or older. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Hüseyin in Serres as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Kahramanmaraş (Maraş), Omeraga and Aydın from 1890 to 1894, then a return to Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1904. The last posts were in Pazar (Atina) from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Pazar, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
