Life#
Salih Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1854/55 (AH 1271), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1875/76, Salih began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Trabzon, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1875/76 to 1910/11 places Salih in Trabzon, the birthplace, first as Rusumat Kolculugu, from 1886/87 in the Ambar Kalemi, from 1891/92 as Iskele Memuru and from 1909/10 as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Only 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 425 in 1909/10, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Trabzon, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 37 years of salary come to 130,440 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
