Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Fuat Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Fuat had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1889/90, at about 17, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Fuat in the Ambar Kalemi in Izmir, where the entries run to 1897/98, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1892/93. The last posts were in Aydın from 1898 to 1901.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 515 in 1900/01, as Seyyar Memur in Aydın, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less.
