Life#
Abdullah Behçet Efendi was born in Sivas in 1872/73 (AH 1289), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Behçet also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Sivas in 1896/97, at about 24, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Abdullah Behçet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Skopje (Üsküp), where the entries run to 1905/06. In 1906/07 the lists place Abdullah Behçet in Magila.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Magila, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less.
