Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Sivas in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1889/90, Ali Rıza began work in Muş, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Ali Rıza in Pasinler (Hasankale) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Muş, Erciş and Başkale from 1895 to 1901, then Van from 1901 to 1906. The last post was in Argonat in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 500 in 1906/07, as 3. Müdür in Argonat, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
