Life#
Mehmet Ruşen Efendi was born in Van in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Ruşen also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Ruşen began work in Van in 1884/85, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mehmet Ruşen in Van, the birthplace, as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1897/98. The last post was in Çatak (Şatak) in 1905/06.
