Life#
Mehmet Necip Efendi was born in Van in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Necip also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1882/83, Mehmet Necip began work in Van, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Mehmet Necip as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Vize. Next came Karcikan from 1885 to 1892. The last posts were in Gevaş from 1892 to 1894.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 475 in 1892/93, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Gevaş, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 30,600 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
