Life#
Antas Remzi Efendi was born in Adapazarı in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi).
Antas Remzi began work in Geyve in 1882/83, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Antas Remzi as an official (Memur) in İzmit, where the entries run to 1888/89, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1885/86. Antas Remzi then moved to Tarsus, Nablus and Jaffa (Yafa) from 1889 to 1895. The last post was in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1895/96.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 500 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less.
