Life

Garofalidi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Garofalidi also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

Garofalidi began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 21, paid from the start, on 75 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1890/91 and 1891/92, place Garofalidi in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 100 in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92. Garofalidi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) (the name and the birthplace agree).
