Life#
Born in Volos (Golos) in 1842/43 (AH 1258), Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Few officials knew German; no other of the 5,211 officials did. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 2 studied at Darulfunun.
Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi began work in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 25, on a first salary of 2,500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi in Crete (Girit) as Ticaret Mahkemesi Aza Vekili. The annual lists then follow Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi to Istanbul in 1870/71, then back to Istanbul from 1873 to 1875. From 1875 to 1892 the annual entries place Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi in Beyoğlu, with five changes of title, from Bidayet Mahkeme Azasi to Temyiz Mahkemesi Azasi in 1890/91.
Pay rose from 2,500 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 6,000 in 1878/79, as Ticaret Mahkemsi Riyaseti in Beyoğlu, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 3,000 kuruş. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 3 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 14 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1891/92. Yorkiyadi Yorkiyadi received a rank (rütbe).
