Life#
Aziz Efendi was born in Volos (Golos) in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Aziz also wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Aziz began work in Volos in 1867/68, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Aziz in Beyşehir as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1879/80. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1882. The annual lists then follow Aziz to Kosova in 1882/83, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1883 to 1891, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur) in 1887/88. Next came Rize from 1892 to 1896. From 1896 to 1907 every annual entry places Aziz in Istanbul, with a rise to a post in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,175 in 1901/02, the peak, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Istanbul, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less.
