Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Hamit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hamit had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1883/84, Hamit began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1883/84 to 1906/07 places Hamit in Beyoğlu, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1893/94 in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 950 in 1905/06, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 153,600 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
