Life#
Mustafa Şükrü Efendi was born in Karacabey (Mihaliç) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mustafa Şükrü also attended the telegraph school, wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mustafa Şükrü began work in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 19, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Mustafa Şükrü in Istanbul in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), where the entries run to 1892/93. Mustafa Şükrü then moved to Beyoğlu, Beirut (Beyrut), Aydın and Adana, four places in six years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1900 to 1907, first as Mandapost Memuru, from 1901/02 as Kontrol Kalemi Mudur Muavini.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 1,500 in 1901/02, as Kontrol Kalemi Mudur Muavini in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
