Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Salih Zeki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1881/82 to 1895/96 places Salih Zeki in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Fen Kalemi, from 1888/89 as Fen Kalemi Mudur Muavini and from 1895/96 as Rasadhane-i Amire Muduru.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 2,500 in 1895/96, as Rasadhane-i Amire Muduru in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less.
