Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Edirne in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; İbrahim Ethem also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1881/82, İbrahim Ethem began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places İbrahim Ethem in Istanbul in the Fen Kalemi, where the entries run to 1883/84. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Ethem to 11 places in 19 years, from Beyoğlu to Kayseri, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili) in 1902/03. The last post was in Al-Faw (Fav) in 1903/04, with a rise to Sira Mufettisligi. Sana'a, about 3,400 km from Edirne, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 34 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home. In all, 12 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 2,000 in 1903/04, the peak, as Sira Mufettisligi in Al-Faw, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
