Life#
Ali Rıza Bey was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Posta ve Telgraf Naziri". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Ali Rıza in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1908/09, with a rise to a post in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) in 1892/93 and to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini) in 1894/95. In 1909/10 the lists place Ali Rıza in Heybeliada.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 1,220 in 1908/09, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Istanbul, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,200 kuruş. In all, 19 years of salary come to 225,120 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
