Life#
Ahmet Kemal Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmet Kemal also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Kemal began work in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1899/1900 places Ahmet Kemal in the same post, official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), in Galata.
