Life#
Born in Chirpan (Çırpan) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mehmet Selim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Selim had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1893/94, Mehmet Selim began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From 1893/94 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Mehmet Selim in Istanbul, first as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru), from 1901/02 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), from 1904/05 as Muhasebe Baskatip Muavini and from 1905/06 as a chief official (Başmemur).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as Başmemur in Istanbul, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
