Life#
Hasan Kazım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Kazım also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Kazım began work in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From 1893/94 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Hasan Kazım in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi), from 1899/1900 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), from 1900/01 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) and from 1901/02 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
