Life#
Ahmet Hulusi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an office servant (hademe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 15, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Ahmet Hulusi in Beyoğlu as a deliverer (Müvezzi). Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1886 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi) in 1892/93 and to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1896/97, then Svilengrad in 1901/02 and Thessaloniki in 1902/03. From 1903 to 1906 the annual entries place Ahmet Hulusi again in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 700 in 1899/1900, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1905/06, the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
