Life#
Born in Cerkezistan in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Yusuf Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Yusuf also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1885/86, Yusuf began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Yusuf as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1889/90. From 1890 to 1907 the annual entries place Yusuf in Babi askeriye. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 510 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Babi askeriye, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less.
