Life#
İshak Nisyon Amon Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 3 studied at Lisan Mektebi.
İshak Nisyon Amon began work in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places İshak Nisyon Amon in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1890/91. İshak Nisyon Amon then moved to Edessa (Vodina) from 1891 to 1893, then back to Beyoğlu from 1894 to 1899. The last posts were in Zliten and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1899 to 1905 and Beirut (Beyrut) in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900 and to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1901/02. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,000 in 1901/02, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Thessaloniki, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
