Life#
Mehmet Rauf Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 13, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Rauf in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came a return to Thessaloniki, the birthplace, from 1887 to 1892, then Kütahya from 1892 to 1895. Mehmet Rauf then moved to Lemnos (Limni) from 1895 to 1901, then Drama from 1901 to 1906. The last post was in Thessaloniki again in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 800 in 1892/93, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Kütahya, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
