Life#
Ömer Fevzi Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Thessaloniki in 1887/88, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Ömer Fevzi in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1897/98. Next came Svilengrad in 1901/02. From 1902 to 1905 the annual entries place Ömer Fevzi in Edirne.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 800 in 1903/04, as Seyyar Memur in Edirne, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
