Life#
Osman Fevzi Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Fevzi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1889/90, Osman Fevzi began work, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Osman Fevzi in Domokos (Dömeke) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Prilep (Pirlepe) from 1898 to 1901, then a return to Thessaloniki, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1905. The last posts were in Shëngjin in 1905/06, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) and Mount Athos (Aynaroz) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 600 in 1906/07, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Mount Athos, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 42,000 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
