Life#
Mustafa Asım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a head of a sub-district (nahiye müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Galata in 1897/98, at about 26, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1905/06 places Mustafa Asım in Galata, first in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti), from 1900/01 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) and from 1905/06 as Posta Basmemuru.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 530 in 1905/06, as Posta Basmemuru in Galata, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
