Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Yusuf Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Yusuf Ziya in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Galata.
Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, as Mersule Memuru in Galata, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less.
