Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Alanya (Alaiye) in 1895/96, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From 1897/98 to 1905/06 every annual entry places İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), from 1903/04 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
The salary went from 30 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 200 in 1905/06, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 13,860 kuruş, 26 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
