Life

Hasan Şevki Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Şevki also wrote French as well as Turkish.

Hasan Şevki began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From 1897/98 to 1901/02 every annual entry places Hasan Şevki in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru), from 1901/02 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).

Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 200 in 1901/02, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less.
