Life#
Mehmet Hamit Efendi was born in Koprucuk in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From 1897/98 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Mehmet Hamit in Istanbul, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1903/04 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi).
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 210 in 1905/06, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 13 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 15,600 kuruş, 29 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
