Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1891/92, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Şükrü in the same office, control office (Kontrol Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
