Life#
Ahmet Halit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a policeman (polis). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 13, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Halit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Mudanya, Tavşancıl, Mount Athos (Aynaroz) and Cide, four places in nine years, with a rise to official (Memur) in 1898/99 and to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04. In 1905/06 the lists place Ahmet Halit in Elazığ.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 600 in 1903/04, as 3. Müdür in Mount Athos, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
