Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Nesim Salamon Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Nesim Salamon also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Nesim Salamon began work in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 13, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Nesim Salamon in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Next came Büyükada, Heybeliada, Beyoğlu, Al-Faw (Fav) and Samsun, five places in ten years. The last post was in Gelibolu in 1905/06, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru). Al-Faw, about 2,100 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 800 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Al-Faw, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
