Life#
Ali Ramiz Efendi was born in Varna in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Ramiz also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Ali Ramiz began work in Tekirdağ in 1893/94, at about 22, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Ali Ramiz in Tekirdağ as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Ali Ramiz to four places in nine years. The last posts were in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1904 to 1906. Al Hudaydah, about 3,450 km from Varna, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 21 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 2,200 in 1904/05, as Müdür in Al Hudaydah, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 186,960 kuruş, 2.4 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Varnalı devlet adamları" by İSA ÖZHAN (2024) probably refers to Ali Ramiz, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
