Life#
Born in Constanța (Köstence) in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Salim Efendi was the child of a chief clerk (başkatip). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1869/70, Mehmet Salim began work in Constanța, paid from the start, on 600 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Mehmet Salim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Salihli. Next came Soma, Izmir (İzmir), Aydın and Trgovište (Tırgovişte), four places in five years. From 1886 to 1897 the annual entries place Mehmet Salim in Bandırma, first as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), from 1891/92 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 800 in 1891/92, as 2. Müdür in Bandırma, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
