Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Yeniköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Rumelihisarı from 1876 to 1878, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1878 to 1889. Next came Beyoğlu from 1889 to 1893. The last posts were in Bandırma from 1893 to 1896. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 450 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
